The resolution designates May 7 of each year as Cystinosis Awareness Day in New Jersey to raise public awareness about cystinosis, a rare genetic disorder affecting approximately 2,000 individuals worldwide, including 500 to 600 Americans, with reported cases in New Jersey. Cystinosis leads to the accumulation of cystine crystals in cells, causing severe damage to major organs such as the kidneys, eyes, and brain. The most severe form, infantile nephropathic cystinosis, accounts for 95% of cases and can result in complete kidney failure by age 10 if left untreated. Although there is no cure, advancements in treatment have significantly improved survival rates and quality of life for those affected.
By recognizing May 7 as Cystinosis Awareness Day, the resolution aims to enhance education, advocacy, and fundraising efforts related to the disease. The Cystinosis Research Network, which established this awareness day in 2018, emphasizes the importance of early detection and treatment compliance to improve health outcomes. The resolution calls for the Governor to issue an annual proclamation to encourage participation from state agencies, organizations, and citizens in awareness initiatives, thereby fostering a supportive environment for individuals and families impacted by cystinosis in New Jersey.
