This bill mandates that public institutions of higher education provide an alternative scholarship to student-athletes who lose their athletic scholarships due to incapacitating injuries or illnesses. Specifically, if an athletic scholarship is rescinded or not renewed because of such an injury or illness, the institution is required to offer a scholarship equal in value to the original athletic scholarship. This alternative scholarship will be available for the duration of the student-athlete's enrollment in an undergraduate program, or for a maximum of five academic years, whichever period is shorter.

The bill also includes definitions for key terms, such as "incapacitating injury or illness," which refers to conditions directly related to the student-athlete's participation in intercollegiate athletics that render them medically ineligible to continue. Additionally, "student-athlete" is defined as an undergraduate student involved in intercollegiate athletics at a public institution. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
