This bill mandates that the New Jersey Medicaid program cover emergency contraceptives without the need for a prescription or any other form of authorization. Currently, while Medicaid does provide coverage for emergency contraceptives, it requires a prescription, which can create barriers for individuals seeking timely access to these medications. By eliminating the prescription requirement, the bill aims to enhance access to emergency contraceptives, allowing individuals to obtain them over the counter without incurring out-of-pocket expenses.

Additionally, the bill directs the Commissioner of Human Services to apply for any necessary state plan amendments or waivers to implement these changes and secure federal funding for Medicaid expenditures. It also requires the Commissioner to adopt relevant rules and regulations to ensure the effective execution of the act. The provisions of this bill are set to take effect immediately, regardless of federal approval.
