This bill amends current law to eliminate the $15 fee for special license plates issued to firefighters and members of first aid or rescue squads in New Jersey. The Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission will now issue these special plates without any additional cost, aside from the standard registration fees for the vehicle. The bill specifies that the special plates can be issued to individuals who are compensated, partially compensated, or volunteer members of fire departments or first aid/rescue squads, as well as to their spouses, parents, or business firms where they are principal owners or stockholders.

Additionally, the bill updates the language in the law to replace references to the "director" with "chief administrator" and clarifies the process for returning the special plates if the individual resigns or is terminated from their association with the fire department or rescue squad. The changes aim to provide financial relief to those who serve in these critical roles, encouraging their continued participation in emergency services. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
