This bill amends the existing Motor Vehicle Violations Surcharge System in New Jersey by increasing the threshold for incurring surcharges from six to 10 motor vehicle penalty points. Under the current law, drivers who accumulate six or more points within a three-year period are subject to a surcharge of $150, plus an additional $25 for each point over six. The proposed change aims to reduce the number of drivers who face license suspensions due to unpaid surcharges by allowing them to accumulate more points before being penalized.

The bill specifies that a driver will only be subject to surcharges if they accumulate 10 or more points within three years from their last posted conviction. This adjustment is intended to alleviate the financial burden on drivers and decrease the likelihood of license suspensions resulting from failure to pay surcharges. The bill is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
