This bill designates September 11 of each year as "September 11 Remembrance Day" in New Jersey, honoring the memory of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. It recognizes the bravery of police officers, firefighters, emergency services personnel, and citizens who risked their lives to assist victims during the attacks. The bill encourages local governments and patriotic organizations to hold public ceremonies to salute these contributions and to read the names of local victims. Additionally, it mandates that all American and State flags in New Jersey be flown at half-staff on this day.
Furthermore, the bill requires public schools in New Jersey to observe a one-minute period of silence at 10 A.M. each year on September 11, in memory of the victims and in recognition of those who aided them. If September 11 falls on a weekend or holiday, the observance will take place on the closest school day. This initiative aims to instill in students the understanding that freedom comes at a cost and to honor the sacrifices made by many during the tragic events of that day.
