The New Jersey Private Contractor Registration Act establishes a mandatory registration process for private contractors and subcontractors engaged in private construction work within the state. Under this act, no contractor or subcontractor may perform private construction work unless they are registered with the Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The act defines private construction work and outlines the necessary information that contractors must provide during the registration process, including business details, financial interests, tax identification numbers, and compliance with various labor laws. An initial non-refundable registration fee of $750 is required, with subsequent renewals costing $500 every two years.

The act also includes provisions for penalties and enforcement, allowing for the suspension or revocation of a contractor's registration for noncompliance or violations of labor laws. Additionally, the act appropriates $2,000,000 from the General Fund to support its implementation. The commissioner is empowered to adopt regulations to facilitate the act's objectives, and the act will take effect six months after its enactment, although preparatory administrative actions may be taken beforehand.
