This bill amends existing labor laws in New Jersey to establish specific working hours for minors aged 14 and 15 who are employed by or as professional athletes. It allows these minors to work after 11 p.m. and into the early morning hours of the next day, provided that the work is a continuation of a shift that began before 11 p.m. This employment requires a special written permit from the minor's parents or legal guardian, detailing the hours they are allowed to work. However, the bill stipulates that no minor can work after 3 a.m. or before 6 a.m. on days preceding a regularly scheduled school day.
Additionally, the bill clarifies that minors aged 16 to 18 may work up to 50 hours in one week and up to 10 hours in one day during the summer months, specifically from the last day of school until Labor Day. The legislation also specifies that the provisions do not apply to minors working at summer camps, conferences, or retreats operated by nonprofit or religious organizations, unless the work is primarily related to general maintenance or food service. The bill is set to take effect immediately upon enactment.
