This bill mandates that school districts in New Jersey provide age-appropriate instruction on menstrual health and hygiene for students in grades four through 12, as part of their implementation of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Comprehensive Health and Physical Education. The instruction will cover various topics, including the proper use of menstrual hygiene products, the symptoms and long-term effects of menstrual disorders, the implications of period poverty, and guidance on when to seek medical advice.
Additionally, prior to the commencement of the instruction unit, schools are required to distribute information to parents and guardians detailing the topics that will be covered and the relevant standards. This initiative aims to enhance students' understanding of menstrual health and hygiene, thereby promoting better health outcomes and awareness among young individuals. The bill is set to take effect immediately and will first apply to the full school year following its enactment.
