This bill amends existing New Jersey law to expand the scope of practice for licensed audiologists by allowing them to select, prescribe, and order hearing aids, in addition to their current ability to dispense and fit them. The amendments specify that audiologists must have successfully completed an accredited program of coursework and clinical training that covers the selection, prescribing, ordering, dispensing, and fitting of hearing aids. This change is in response to recent updates from the United States Food and Drug Administration regarding the classification of hearing aids, which now includes over-the-counter and prescription categories.

The bill modifies the definitions within the law, particularly regarding the practice of audiology, to include the new responsibilities associated with prescribing hearing aids. The legal language has been updated to reflect these changes, ensuring that audiologists are adequately trained and licensed to provide comprehensive hearing aid services. The act is set to take effect 60 days after its enactment.
