This bill amends the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) to allow county prosecutors, who are nominated and appointed under the New Jersey Constitution, to receive service credit in the Prosecutors Part of PERS for their previous work as judicial law clerks. Specifically, it permits these prosecutors to purchase credit for their clerk service after their appointment, which is a change from current law that does not recognize such purchases as valid for service credit in the Prosecutors Part.

Additionally, the bill clarifies that any service credit established in PERS prior to the enactment of this bill will be recognized in the Prosecutors Part without additional costs to the prosecutor. It also stipulates that county prosecutors or acting county prosecutors enrolled in the Defined Contribution Retirement Program can receive service credit in the Prosecutors Part, provided they pay the equivalent contributions required during their membership in that program. The bill is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
