This bill mandates that all electric public utilities in New Jersey submit an electric infrastructure improvement plan to the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) within 90 days of the bill's enactment. The primary goal of these plans is to reopen electric distribution circuits that have been previously closed to new renewable energy installations or limited to a capacity of 100 kilowatts or less. Each plan must include specific provisions aimed at enhancing the integration of renewable energy, such as enabling solar inverters and energy storage systems to manage reactive power and respond to weather predictions, as well as any additional solutions identified by the utilities.
Furthermore, the BPU is required to review and either approve or modify these plans within 120 days of their submission. As a condition for approval, the bill stipulates that utilities must schedule the necessary work to implement the plans as soon as possible. This legislative effort aims to facilitate the expansion of renewable energy sources in the state by improving the existing electric infrastructure.
