This bill amends N.J.S.18A:62-25 to extend eligibility for tuition benefits to the dependents of members of the United States Armed Forces who died while on active duty. Previously, the tuition waiver was limited to the child or surviving spouse of members of the New Jersey National Guard who died under specific circumstances. The new language allows for a broader inclusion of dependents from the Armed Forces, ensuring they can attend public institutions of higher education in New Jersey and receive up to 16 credits per semester tuition-free, provided they meet certain conditions.

Additionally, the bill introduces a new provision that grants eligible students a monetary award equal to 10 percent of their tuition costs at the public institution they attend. This award is intended to assist with non-tuition education expenses, such as housing, dining, fees, or supplies. The act is set to take effect immediately and will apply to the first full academic year following its enactment.
