This bill establishes a legislative internship program in New Jersey, allowing members of the Legislature to employ interns with the approval of the presiding officer of their respective House. The program is open to full-time and part-time students from accredited institutions of higher education, excluding those in juris doctorate and PhD programs. Priority is given to New Jersey residents and students attending institutions within the state. Participants are required to complete one work period in a legislator's district office, with the option for legislators to retain interns for additional work periods if both parties agree.
Additionally, the bill allocates up to $10,000 annually for each legislator to employ interns and provides a stipend of $1,000 for each completed work period, which will be prorated and paid bi-weekly or monthly. To support this initiative, the bill appropriates $1,200,000 from the State General Fund to the New Jersey Legislature for the internship program's implementation. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
