This bill amends the existing volunteer tuition credit program to increase the tuition credit amounts available to active members of volunteer fire companies and volunteer first aid or rescue squads, as well as their dependent children and spouses. Under the current law, these individuals are eligible for tuition-free enrollment in postsecondary programs at county colleges, vocational schools, or technical institutes, with a maximum tuition credit of $2,400. The bill proposes to raise this maximum amount to $5,000, allowing for a more substantial financial benefit for those who serve in these volunteer roles.
Additionally, the bill increases the annual tuition credit from $600 to $1,250 for each year of service, while maintaining the requirement that volunteers commit to a minimum of four years of service in exchange for the tuition credit. This change aims to provide greater support and incentive for individuals to participate in volunteer emergency services, thereby enhancing community safety and engagement.
