This bill amends the existing volunteer tuition credit program to increase the tuition credit amounts available to active members of volunteer fire companies and volunteer first aid or rescue squads, as well as their dependent children and spouses. Specifically, the maximum tuition credit amount has been raised from $2,400 to $5,000. Additionally, the annual tuition credit awarded for each year of service has been increased from $600 to $1,250, while still maintaining the requirement that individuals must commit to a minimum of four years of service to be eligible for these benefits.

The changes aim to provide greater financial support for volunteers and their families pursuing postsecondary education at county colleges, vocational schools, or technical institutes. The bill ensures that these individuals can enroll on a tuition-free basis, contingent upon available classroom space and the presence of tuition-paying students. The amendments reflect a commitment to recognizing and incentivizing the service of volunteers in their communities.
