This bill amends the existing volunteer tuition credit program to increase the tuition credit amounts available to active members of volunteer fire companies and volunteer first aid or rescue squads, as well as their dependent children and spouses. Specifically, the maximum tuition credit that can be received is raised from $2,400 to $5,000. Additionally, the annual tuition credit awarded for each year of service is increased from $600 to $1,250, while still maintaining the requirement that individuals must commit to a minimum of four years of service in exchange for the tuition benefits.
The changes aim to provide greater financial support for volunteers who dedicate their time to serving their communities. The bill ensures that eligible individuals can enroll in postsecondary programs at county colleges, vocational schools, or technical institutes on a tuition-free basis, contingent upon available classroom space and the presence of tuition-paying students. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
