This bill amends the existing volunteer tuition credit program to increase the tuition credit amounts available to active members of volunteer fire companies and volunteer first aid or rescue squads, as well as their dependent children and spouses. Under the current law, these individuals are eligible for tuition-free enrollment in postsecondary programs at county colleges, vocational schools, or technical institutes, with a maximum tuition credit of $2,400. The proposed changes raise this maximum to $5,000 and increase the annual tuition credit from $600 to $1,250 for each year of service, while maintaining the requirement of a four-year commitment to volunteer service.
The bill aims to enhance the incentives for individuals to serve in volunteer roles by providing greater financial support for their education. The adjustments to the tuition credit structure are designed to better reflect the value of the service provided by volunteers and to encourage more individuals to participate in these essential community roles. The changes will take effect immediately upon enactment.
