This bill establishes a program for issuing special license plates to honorably discharged veterans in New Jersey. Upon application, veterans can receive distinctive plates that will feature a design determined by the Adjutant General of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, which will include the word "Veteran" and the insignia of the military branch in which they served. The bill stipulates a $15 fee for these special plates, in addition to the standard vehicle registration fees, and allows the Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission to create rules and regulations regarding their issuance and use.
Additionally, the bill provides that the surviving spouse of a deceased veteran may retain the special license plates previously issued to the veteran for use on their own vehicle. The Chief Administrator is also tasked with informing motorists about the availability of these plates through registration renewal notices and signage in commission facilities. The act is set to take effect 180 days after its enactment.
