This bill allows the surviving spouse of a retired member of the Police and Firemen's Retirement System (PFRS) to enroll in the State Health Benefits Program (SHBP) and continue receiving pension benefits after remarriage under specific conditions. The surviving spouse must have been receiving an accidental disability retirement allowance at the time of the member's death, and the State will cover the annual premiums for health care benefits for both the spouse and any dependent children. Additionally, the State will bear any increased contributions to the retirement system required from employers other than the State due to the continuation of pension payments after remarriage.

To qualify for these benefits, the surviving spouse must provide documentation approved by the Board of Trustees of the PFRS, showing that the injury leading to the disability was a significant contributing factor in the member's death. Furthermore, those whose pensions were terminated due to remarriage before the bill's effective date can apply for reinstatement of their pension benefits, which will be payable from the date of their application. This legislation aims to provide additional support to surviving spouses of PFRS members while ensuring that the necessary conditions are met for eligibility.
