This bill mandates that children's meals served in restaurants adhere to specific nutritional standards to combat rising obesity rates among children. The standards include limits on calories (no more than 600), sodium (770 milligrams), fat (35% of calories), sugars (35% of calories), saturated fat (10% of calories), and trans fat (0.5 grams). Additionally, each meal must include at least 0.5 cups of fresh fruits or vegetables and one of the following: a whole grain product, a lean protein, or a dairy option. If a beverage is included, it must be water, nonfat or one percent milk, or 100% fruit juice with no added sweeteners.

Restaurants are required to display the nutritional content of children's meals prominently on their menus. The Department of Health or local health boards will have the authority to inspect restaurants for compliance and can issue penalties for violations, starting at $1,000 for the first offense and increasing for subsequent violations, with a cap of $15,000 within a 30-day period. The bill aims to promote healthier eating habits among children and reduce obesity-related health issues in New Jersey.
