This bill mandates the establishment of a Human Trafficking Unit within the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety, led by the Attorney General. The unit will consist of one or more assistant or deputy attorneys general, with one designated as the Human Trafficking Coordinator. The responsibilities of the unit include prosecuting human trafficking cases, assisting counties in investigations and prosecutions, providing information and support services for victims, collaborating with various state departments and agencies to identify victims and prosecute cases, and conducting public awareness campaigns about human trafficking.
Additionally, the Attorney General is required to develop and approve a training course and curriculum for law enforcement officials and county prosecutors regarding the handling and prosecution of human trafficking cases, with reviews and modifications occurring at least every two years. The Human Trafficking Coordinator will also be responsible for providing an annual report to the Governor and the Legislature detailing the unit's activities and any recommendations for legislative improvements.
