This bill establishes a special fund within the Department of the Treasury called the United Way of New Jersey Fund, allowing taxpayers to make voluntary contributions through their gross income tax returns. Taxpayers can indicate a portion of their tax refund or an additional contribution to be deposited into this fund. The bill also stipulates that any administrative costs incurred by the Division of Taxation for the collection of these contributions may be deducted from the total receipts, with the net contributions being deposited into the United Way Fund.
Furthermore, the bill mandates that the Legislature annually appropriate all funds in the United Way of New Jersey Fund for equal distribution to each United Way organization in the state, supporting their various programs and services. This initiative aims to enhance the ability of local United Way chapters to address and meet the human care needs within their communities. The act is set to take effect immediately and will apply to taxable years beginning on or after January 1 following its enactment.
