This bill mandates the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to conduct a comprehensive study on indoor air quality in public schools within one year of the bill's effective date. The study will involve a representative sampling of schools across New Jersey, ensuring diversity in regions and educational levels, including preschools, elementary, middle, and high schools. The sampling will also encompass schools of varying ages, from newly constructed to those over 50 years old. The DEP will identify levels of various indoor air contaminants, including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds, and will extrapolate data to estimate the prevalence of these contaminants in public schools statewide.
Additionally, the DEP is tasked with compiling a list of common indoor air contaminants found in public schools and developing guidance documents to help schools mitigate these contaminants. The guidance will incorporate existing recommendations from the Department of Health and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, as appropriate. The DEP will share the list and guidance with the Department of Education (DOE), and both departments will ensure that this information is publicly accessible on their websites.
