This bill mandates the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to conduct a comprehensive study on indoor air quality in public schools within one year of the bill's effective date. The study will involve a representative sampling of schools across New Jersey, ensuring diversity in both geographic location and school age. Specifically, the sampling will include various types of schools, such as preschools, elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as schools built in different time frames, ranging from the last five years to over fifty years ago.

In addition to the study, the DEP is tasked with identifying levels of specific indoor air contaminants, including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds, among others. The department will compile a list of the most common indoor air contaminants found in public schools and develop guidance documents to help schools mitigate these contaminants. The DEP will collaborate with the Department of Education and other relevant organizations, and both departments will be required to make the findings and guidance publicly accessible on their websites.
