This bill amends existing legislation regarding the storage of firearms in relation to minors. Specifically, it raises the age definition of a minor from under 16 to under 18 years old, thereby expanding the scope of the law to include older minors. The bill maintains that firearm owners are guilty of a disorderly persons offense if they know or should know that a minor is likely to access a loaded firearm and do not take appropriate precautions, such as storing the firearm in a securely locked box, in a secure location, or using a trigger lock.

Additionally, the bill introduces a requirement for law enforcement officers to conduct follow-up visits to the premises of firearm owners who have been observed not complying with the storage requirements. This ensures that firearms are properly secured to prevent access by minors. The penalties for failing to comply with these regulations remain the same, with a disorderly persons offense punishable by up to six months imprisonment, a fine of up to $1,000, or both.
