This bill establishes that dependent children of veterans who either died as a result of service-related injuries, are missing in action, or are totally and permanently disabled due to service-related injuries are entitled to tuition-free education at public institutions of higher education in New Jersey. Specifically, these dependent children can receive up to 60 credit hours for an associate degree program and up to 120 credit hours for a baccalaureate degree program. To qualify, the dependent child must meet several criteria, including being a New Jersey resident, having no federal veterans education benefits that exceed the tuition-free credit hours, maintaining satisfactory academic progress, being accepted and enrolled in an undergraduate program, and applying for all available state and federal grants and scholarships.
Additionally, the bill mandates that the State will reimburse public institutions of higher education for the costs incurred from waiving tuition for eligible dependent children. This financial support aims to ensure that the children of veterans can access higher education without the burden of tuition fees, thereby honoring the sacrifices made by their parents in service to the country. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
