This bill amends existing New Jersey law regarding personal injury protection (PIP) coverage under automobile insurance policies. It specifically prohibits the selection of health insurance coverage as the primary payer for medical expenses related to personal injury protection. Instead, the bill mandates that the personal injury protection coverage of the named insured will serve as the primary coverage for the named insured and any resident relatives in the household who do not have their own automobile insurance policy. Additionally, it stipulates that no individual can recover PIP benefits from more than one automobile insurance policy for injuries sustained in a single accident.

The bill also removes previous provisions that allowed for health insurance coverage to be designated as the primary coverage for medical expenses under PIP. This change aims to streamline the process of claiming benefits and ensure that personal injury protection remains the primary source of coverage for medical expenses resulting from automobile accidents. The bill is set to take effect immediately and will apply to all relevant insurance plans delivered, issued, executed, or renewed in New Jersey after the effective date.
