This bill establishes a program for issuing special license plates to honorably discharged veterans in New Jersey. Upon application, veterans can receive distinctive plates that feature a design determined by the Adjutant General of the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, which will include the word "Veteran" and the insignia of the military branch in which they served. The application for these plates will incur a fee of $15, in addition to the standard vehicle registration fees. The Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission is tasked with notifying motorists about this opportunity and will also create rules and regulations for the issuance and use of these special plates.
Additionally, the bill allows surviving spouses of deceased veterans to retain the special license plates previously issued to their spouses for use on their own vehicles. This provision ensures that the legacy of the veteran can be honored even after their passing. The bill is set to take effect 180 days after its enactment.
