This bill mandates the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to conduct annual assessments of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that are currently unregulated. The purpose of these assessments is to determine if a maximum contaminant level or other drinking water standards should be established for these substances. Additionally, the DEP is required to evaluate whether existing and proposed maximum contaminant levels adequately protect children's health, considering their lower average body weight compared to adults. The bill also allows the DEP to consult with the Drinking Water Quality Institute to assist in these assessments.

Furthermore, the DEP must compile the findings from each assessment into a written report, which will be submitted to the Governor and the Legislature, and made publicly available on the DEP's website. The bill defines PFAS as any fluorinated organic chemical containing at least one fully fluorinated carbon atom, highlighting the significance of these substances due to their widespread use and persistence in the environment. The act is set to take effect immediately upon passage.
