This bill amends existing laws to enhance the enforcement of motor vehicle inspection regulations by allowing the division of state police to utilize civilian automotive equipment inspectors alongside state troopers. Specifically, it inserts provisions that authorize the director of the division of state police to assign both state troopers and automotive equipment inspectors to assist in enforcing motor vehicle inspection laws. These inspectors will have statewide enforcement duties, including auditing inspection stations and investigating malfeasance. Additionally, the bill grants these inspectors the authority to enter authorized motor vehicle inspection stations during business hours to carry out their responsibilities.

Furthermore, the bill introduces a new subparagraph that permits certified officers of the department of safety or other law enforcement agents to enter the commercial premises of carriers during regular business hours. This access is for the purpose of conducting compliance reviews, new entrant safety audits, or investigations, and allows them to inspect required records to ensure adherence to regulations. The bill is set to take effect 60 days after its passage.
