This bill amends existing law to allow for homestead food production not only in the home kitchen of a person's primary residence but also in a designated food production area within that residence. The new legal language specifies that this food production area must include essential features such as handwashing facilities, equipment and food storage, food contact surfaces, general sanitation, and pet exclusion areas. Definitions for these terms are also provided to ensure clarity regarding the requirements for maintaining a safe and sanitary food production environment.
Additionally, the bill modifies labeling requirements for homestead food products sold from various locations, including home farm stands and farmers' markets. It removes the term "kitchen" from the labeling language and replaces it with "food production area," thereby reflecting the expanded scope of where food can be produced. The labels must include specific information about the product and the operation, as well as statements regarding licensing and inspection exemptions. The act is set to take effect 60 days after its passage.
