This bill, known as the Bradley Haas Act, establishes a death benefit for the family of New Hampshire hospital security officers killed in the line of duty. It is named in honor of Security Officer Bradley Haas, who was fatally shot while on duty at a New Hampshire hospital. The bill appropriates a sum of $100,000, which is the death benefit Officer Haas would have been entitled to if he had been a sworn law enforcement officer at the time of his death. This benefit is to be distributed to the beneficiaries of Bradley Haas in the same manner as provided in RSA 21-I:29-a, II, with the governor authorized to draw a warrant for the sum from the treasury.
Additionally, the bill amends RSA 21-I:29-a, I(g) by inserting a new subparagraph that includes security officers employed by the state of New Hampshire in the definition of "police officer" for the purposes of the death benefit provided to employees killed in the line of duty. This amendment effectively extends the death benefit coverage to state security officers. The act is set to take effect on June 30, 2024.
