This bill amends RSA 276-A:4 to allow youths under 16 years of age to work during the school year when their attendance at school is not required. Currently, youths under 16 are only allowed to work for a maximum of 3 hours per day on school days and 23 hours per week during school weeks. The bill removes these restrictions and allows youths to work 8 hours per day on nonschool days and 48 hours per week during vacations. Additionally, the bill allows youths under 16 to work at any time they are not required to attend school when school is in session. The bill also states that the commissioner of labor may suspend the restrictions on work hours for youths under 16 who are employed in agricultural work upon application by the employer. The bill also clarifies that youths under 12 years of age can only be employed by their parents, grandparents, or guardian, or in certain defined work situations. Finally, the bill states that youths 16 or 17 years of age who are enrolled in school cannot work more than 35 hours during a work week when school is in session, unless their required attendance is less than 35 hours per week, in which case they can work at any time they are not required to attend school. The bill will take effect 60 days after its passage.
