This bill introduces special license plates for fire departments by amending RSA 261:91. The amendment includes the insertion of the word "fire" to the existing list of entities eligible for special number plates, which already includes county sheriffs, deputy sheriffs, members or retired members of the national guard, active-duty members of the armed forces, justices of the supreme and superior courts, and vehicles of state police and motor vehicle divisions. The special plates will feature the state motto "Live Free or Die" and will be issued without a number plate fee for the state, except for those plates furnished to the state police and motor vehicle divisions.

The bill also outlines that special number plates for active-duty members of the armed forces will be distinct from those for veterans. Additionally, it provides for the use of special number plates by surviving spouses of retired national guard members and deceased active-duty members of the armed forces. These surviving spouses may use the special number plates indefinitely after the death of the member until they remarry. The bill's enactment is contingent on whether HB 1354 of the 2024 regular legislative session becomes law. If HB 1354 becomes law, section 1 will not take effect, and section 2 will take effect 60 days after its passage. If HB 1354 does not become law, section 1 will take effect 60 days after its passage, and section 2 will not take effect. The remainder of the act takes effect on July 19, 2024.
