This bill establishes the Geologic Resources Advisory Committee within the Department of Environmental Services. The committee is created to determine the priorities and long-term plan for geologic mapping in the state, funded by the United States Geological Survey's National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program. It serves as the State Mapping Advisory Committee, fulfilling the requirements of 43 U.S.C. 31c(d)(2)(B) related to the geologic mapping program. The committee will be composed of various members, including directors of state departments, representatives from geotechnical and geological firms, a municipal representative, and members from academic institutions, among others.
The committee is tasked with basing the state's geologic mapping priorities on areas of need and solving critical earth science problems. It is required to meet at least annually to prioritize geologic mapping projects, determine the long-term mapping plan, and decide on mapping projects to be submitted for federal funding. The state geologist and the director of the New Hampshire Geological Survey will call the meeting, and the committee will elect a chairperson annually. The establishment of the committee and its authority will be terminated if federal funding through the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program ceases to be available. The act is set to take effect on July 1, 2024.
