This bill modifies existing legislation to expand the types of firearms that can be used for hunting game. Specifically, it amends RSA 207:3, I to allow the use of rifles and certain pistols for hunting. The bill changes the language from "lever-action carbine" to "rifle" and updates the caliber specifications. Previously, the law specified that only lever-action carbines chambered in .357, .44 Magnum, or .45 Colt could be used in areas restricted to handgun or pistol hunting. The new language allows for the use of rifles chambered in a straight-walled pistol cartridge of .357 caliber or greater.
The bill also sets the effective date for these changes as January 1, 2025. It maintains the prohibition on using air rifles to hunt larger game such as moose, bear, turkey, or deer, while still allowing air rifles to be used for small game as specified by rules adopted pursuant to RSA 541-A. The bill was approved on July 3, 2024, and will be enacted at the beginning of 2025, thereby giving hunters more firearm options for taking game within the legal hunting hours, which are between half an hour before sunrise and half an hour after sunset.
