This bill, known as the Matthew Brown Act, mandates that student identification cards for students in grades 6-12 include the helpline number for the National Alliance for Eating Disorders. The bill stipulates that this requirement applies to new student identification cards issued after the effective date of the section, as well as replacement cards for those that are damaged or lost. Schools must certify annually that the helpline information is accurate and up-to-date. The helpline must be clearly labeled on the cards with the current phone number at the time of the card's production.
Additionally, the bill updates the existing requirement for student identification cards to feature the contact information for the suicide prevention helpline. It replaces the reference to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline with the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. This change involves the deletion of the old name and insertion of the new name and number. Schools are again required to certify the accuracy of this information annually. The new language on the cards will read: "Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: Call 988." The act is set to take effect 60 days after its passage, with an effective date of August 13, 2024.
