This bill, known as "Max's Law," allows emergency services personnel to provide pre-hospital treatment and transportation to operational canines that are ill or injured in the line of duty. Operational canines are defined as those used by law enforcement, fire departments, or other agencies, including police, search and rescue, scent detection, and comfort canines. The bill specifies that ambulances can transport these canines to veterinary care facilities only if no humans require transport or treatment at that time. Additionally, law enforcement officers may be requested to help secure and accompany the canine during transport.
The bill also includes provisions to protect emergency medical care providers and licensed emergency medical service units from personal liability when rendering first aid to operational canines, except in cases of willful, wanton, reckless conduct, or gross negligence. Furthermore, these providers will not be liable for the expenses of a veterinary care facility if they admit an operational canine under emergency conditions. The act takes effect on July 28, 2023, the date of its approval.
