The bill amends sections of the Game Law in Nebraska to introduce new hangtag permits for motor vehicles, alongside existing annual, temporary, disabled veteran, and active-duty military permits. Starting January 1, 2027, individuals with resident motor vehicles will be able to purchase an annual hangtag permit, which will be valid through December 31 of the issuance year and can be transferred between vehicles registered by the permit holder. The fee for this hangtag permit will include the cost of a resident annual permit, a duplicate permit, and a convenience fee not exceeding fifteen dollars. Additionally, the bill clarifies the display requirements for permits, stating that hangtag permits should be hung from the rearview mirror or placed on the front dash if no rearview mirror is present.
The bill also modifies the procurement process for permits, allowing hangtag permits to be obtained from the commission's central and district offices and designated areas of the Nebraska state park system. It maintains that permits, except for hangtag permits, are nontransferable and valid only for the vehicle for which they are issued. The bill includes provisions for penalties for violations related to permit display and usage, classifying such violations as Class V misdemeanors. The original sections of the law that are being amended will be repealed as part of this legislative update.
