This bill amends the Adult Protective Services Act in Nebraska by introducing new definitions and training requirements for adult protective services officials. Specifically, it defines "adult protective services official" as an individual employed by the department responsible for developing and implementing adult protective services. Additionally, the bill mandates that these officials complete a minimum of one hour of training on caring for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia before their employment begins, or within thirty days if they are already employed at the time the act becomes effective.
The training will cover various topics, including psychiatric and behavioral symptoms of dementia, effective communication methods, safety information, and protocols for reporting abuse and neglect. Furthermore, the department is authorized to collaborate with nonprofit organizations that specialize in dementia care to facilitate this training. Each official is required to undergo this training every five years to ensure they remain informed and capable of providing appropriate care and support to vulnerable adults. The bill also repeals the original sections 28-348 and 28-350 of the Reissue Revised Statutes of Nebraska.
