This bill amends section 60-6,175 of the Reissue Revised Statutes of Nebraska to introduce the installation and operation of stop-signal-arm camera systems on school buses. It defines key terms such as "data," "law enforcement agency," and "school bus," and allows school districts to install and operate these camera systems on their buses. The bill also permits school districts to contract with private vendors for the installation and operation of these systems. Additionally, it mandates that any data collected by these cameras must include the date, time, and location of the incident, and that school buses equipped with these cameras must display a warning that is clearly visible from a distance of one hundred feet.
Furthermore, the bill provides for the enforcement of violations related to school bus stop signals through the use of the stop-signal-arm camera systems. A peace officer must review the data collected by the camera before issuing a citation, which will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle within six days of the violation. The registered owner has the right to appeal the citation within thirty days, and if they can provide evidence that they were not driving at the time of the violation, the citation may be rescinded. The original section 60-6,175 is repealed as part of this legislative update.
