The Nebraska Legislature acknowledges the outdated nature of biannual time changes, which negatively affect individual health and business productivity. There is a strong desire among Nebraskans and Americans for common-sense reforms to modernize this approach. The current options under the federal Uniform Time Act of 1966 lead to confusion and inconsistency. Notably, the U.S. Senate unanimously supported the Sunshine Protection Act in 2022, which aimed to establish permanent daylight saving time, and former President Donald J. Trump has also advocated for ending daylight saving time.
In light of these considerations, the Nebraska Legislature urges its Congressional delegation to take proactive steps toward reforming the current daylight saving time system. The proposed changes should focus on enhancing health, boosting economic productivity, supporting agriculture, improving public safety, and ensuring uniformity across the nation. The resolution calls for a copy to be sent to key federal leaders, including the President and Congressional leaders, to emphasize the importance of this issue.
