This bill amends sections 79-215 and 79-2,136 of the Reissue Revised Statutes of Nebraska to modify the admission policies for students in school districts and to enhance their participation in extracurricular activities. Notably, the bill requires school boards to admit students who are enrolled in private, denominational, or parochial schools, or in schools that opt not to meet accreditation requirements, for part-time enrollment in extracurricular activities if the desired activity is not offered by their resident school district. Additionally, it allows for the admission of nonresident students under specific conditions, including those from military families and those residing in certain residential settings.
The bill also introduces new provisions that ensure students enrolled in non-accredited schools can participate in extracurricular activities under the same conditions as public school students, while establishing that these students must be enrolled in at least five credit hours offered by the school district to qualify for participation. Furthermore, it clarifies that participation in extracurricular activities does not grant students transportation rights beyond what is available to public school students. The original sections of the statutes are repealed to accommodate these changes.
