This bill amends section 60-3,104.01 of the Reissue Revised Statutes of Nebraska to modify the fee structure for specialty license plates. The new legal language specifies that the fee for initial issuance or renewal of specialty license plates will be seventy dollars until October 1, 2025, after which it will decrease to forty dollars. Additionally, the bill introduces provisions for applicants of specialty license plates for farm trucks over sixteen tons or commercial motor vehicles registered for five tons or more, requiring them to affix the appropriate tonnage decal to the plate. The bill also outlines the distribution of collected fees, with sixty percent going to the Department of Motor Vehicles Cash Fund and forty percent to the Highway Trust Fund.
Furthermore, the bill allows for the delivery of specialty license plates and registration certificates either by mail or through the county treasurer, with the potential for a postage and handling fee if mailed directly to the applicant. It also provides for the transfer of specialty license plates to other vehicles owned by the same individual, along with a credit for the unused portion of the specialty license plate fee. The application for such a transfer will incur a fee of three dollars, which will also be credited to the Department of Motor Vehicles Cash Fund. The original section 60-3,104.01 is repealed as part of this legislative update.
