The bill amends section 28-470 of the Revised Statutes Cumulative Supplement, 2024, to enhance immunity provisions for individuals involved in the administration of opioid overdose reversal medications, specifically naloxone. It allows health professionals authorized to prescribe or dispense opioid overdose reversal medications to do so without facing administrative action or criminal prosecution when acting with reasonable care. The bill also extends this immunity to family members, friends, and other individuals, including school personnel, who assist someone experiencing an opioid-related overdose, provided they act in good faith.

Additionally, the bill introduces a new definition for "opioid overdose reversal medication," which encompasses any lifesaving medication approved by the FDA for reversing an opioid overdose, including naloxone and nalmefene. The language clarifies that emergency responders and law enforcement personnel who administer these medications in good faith are also protected from liability, unless their actions are willfully negligent. The original section 28-470 is repealed, and the new definitions and provisions are established to better address the opioid crisis and encourage timely intervention in overdose situations.
