1 A BILL FOR AN ACT relating to teachers; to provide tuition waivers for
2 student teachers as prescribed.
3 Be it enacted by the people of the State of Nebraska,

1 Section 1. (1) Beginning in school year 2025-26 through school year
2 2030-31, a student teacher shall be entitled to a waiver of one hundred
3 percent of the resident tuition charges of the University of Nebraska or
4 a Nebraska state college for the semester the student teacher is student
5 teaching in a Nebraska elementary, middle, or high school if the student
6 teacher:
7 (a) Is enrolled at the University of Nebraska or a Nebraska state
8 college;
9 (b) Is taking classes and pursuing a degree that relates to a career
10 in teaching; and
11 (c) Maintains satisfactory academic performance at the University of
12 Nebraska or the Nebraska state college.
13 (2)(a) Beginning in school year 2025-26 through school year 2031-32,
14 for the semester in which a student who meets the requirements of
15 subsection (1) of this section is student teaching, the University of
16 Nebraska or the Nebraska state college shall waive one hundred percent of
17 the student teacher's tuition remaining due after subtracting awarded
18 federal financial aid grants and state scholarships and grants for such
19 semester.
20 (b) The University of Nebraska or the Nebraska state college shall
21 annually submit a report to the Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary
22 Education, on forms and in a manner specified by the commission, relating
23 to the number of individuals receiving the waivers described in
24 subsection (2)(a) of this section and any other information the
25 commission may require. Such report shall not contain any personally
26 identifiable information of a student receiving a waiver.
27 (3) It is the intent of the Legislature to appropriate up to three
28 million dollars from the General Fund to carry out this section.
