The bill mandates a legislative management study during the 2025-26 interim to evaluate the feasibility and desirability of requiring state agency libraries, including the state library and those at institutions governed by the state board of higher education, to retain original copies of books or written materials. This requirement would apply when publishers release new versions that update the language to be more socially progressive, politically correct, inclusive, or less socially offensive. The study will also analyze the impact of artificial intelligence on the retention and alteration of library materials, as well as the fiscal and operational implications of collection management.
The findings and recommendations from this study, along with any necessary legislation to implement these recommendations, will be reported to the seventieth legislative assembly. This initiative aims to ensure that libraries maintain access to original texts while navigating the evolving landscape of language and societal norms.
