The proposed bill mandates a legislative management study of correctional facilities in North Dakota during the 2025-26 interim. The study will focus on various aspects of jails and regional correctional centers, including their current and projected infrastructure needs, the costs and benefits of regional facilities, the impacts of deferred admissions, and the prioritization of inmates sentenced to the department of corrections and rehabilitation.
To ensure a comprehensive analysis, the study will gather input from a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from counties with populations of 7,500 or more, those from smaller counties, local law enforcement officials, the department of corrections and rehabilitation, the office of management and budget, and the attorney general. The findings and recommendations from this study, along with any necessary legislation for implementation, will be reported to the seventieth legislative assembly. Notably, the bill includes new language to specify the inclusion of local law enforcement officials and the attorney general as representatives in the study.
