This bill appropriates $3,500,000 from the strategic investment and improvements fund to the attorney general for a peace officer and correctional officer appreciation grant program for the biennium from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2027. The funds will be distributed to city and county law enforcement agencies based on the number of licensed peace officers and correctional officers they employ. A minimum of $750,000 is designated for agencies with ten or fewer employees in law enforcement roles. The funding is intended for retention bonuses for current officers and tuition payments for law enforcement trainees.
Additionally, the attorney general is required to report to the legislative management during the 2025-26 interim on the utilization and effectiveness of the grant funds, including the number of grants awarded, average bonus amounts, and other outcomes of the program. This appropriation is classified as a one-time funding item, indicating that it is not intended to be a recurring expense in future budgets.
