The bill proposes a legislative management study on the feasibility, siting, and deployment of advanced nuclear power plants in North Dakota during the 2025-26 interim. The study will evaluate various factors, including potential siting locations, electric grid connectivity, land use considerations, economic impacts, nuclear waste storage, and the feasibility of small modular and micro nuclear reactors. It will also assess any existing restrictions on advanced nuclear energy development as outlined in the North Dakota Century Code. The study will involve participation from an institution of higher education to gauge social interests and community acceptance of potential sites.

To facilitate this study, the bill appropriates $300,000 from the state general fund and an additional $300,000 from non-state sources for consulting services, with the legislative council tasked with seeking matching funds from the private sector. The committee overseeing the study will consist of members from the energy industry, public service commission, industrial commission, and representatives from both the House and Senate. The findings and recommendations from the study, along with any necessary legislation, will be reported to the seventieth legislative assembly.
