1 A concurrent resolution designating the Winchester Model 1876 as North Dakota's state firearm.
2 WHEREAS, the Winchester Model 1876 was introduced as the Centennial Rifle in 1876
3 and was a larger-framed, more powerful version of the Model 1873; and
4 WHEREAS, the Winchester Model 1876 was a powerful firearm with great stopping
5 capabilities and its in-the-field reliability was well-respected by frontiersmen; and
6 WHEREAS, notable people to have used the Winchester Model 1876 include the Texas
7 Rangers, Canadian Mounted Police, Chiricahua Apache war chief Geronimo, and avid hunter
8 President Theodore Roosevelt; and
9 WHEREAS, the Winchester Model 1876 was President Theodore Roosevelt's first hunting
10 rifle, which he purchased at the age of 22; and
11 WHEREAS, President Theodore Roosevelt visited the North Dakota badlands in 1884 to
12 hunt buffalo with his trusted Model 1876 and claimed North Dakota to be the love of his life; and
13 WHEREAS, the Winchester Model 1876 was discontinued in 1898, after 63,871 guns had
14 been produced;
15 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF NORTH DAKOTA, THE
16 HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN:
17 That the Sixty-eighth Legislative Assembly designates the Winchester Model 1876 as North
18 Dakota's state firearm; and
19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Secretary of State forward copies of this resolution
20 to each member of the North Dakota Congressional Delegation, the Governor, and the Attorney
21 General.
