1 A BILL for an Act to create and enact a new section to chapter 54-12 of the North Dakota
2 Century Code, relating to care for retired police dogs; to provide an appropriation; and to
3 provide an expiration date.
4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF NORTH DAKOTA:
5 SECTION 1. A new section to chapter 54-12 of the North Dakota Century Code is created
6 and enacted as follows:
7 Retired law enforcement dogs - Reimbursement.
8 1. The attorney general shall create a program to assist local and state law enforcement
9 dogs that are retired by reason of age or medical condition.
10 2. The attorney general shall reimburse the handler of a law enforcement dog if the
11 handler:
12 a. Is authorized to retain possession of a retired law enforcement dog in a private
13 setting at the handler's home; and
14 b. Submits itemized receipts each quarter for medical bills, food, and other essential
15 needs of the law enforcement dog.
16 3. Reimbursements under this section may not exceed one thousand dollars per retired
17 law enforcement dog per calendar year.
18 4. The attorney general shall adopt any rules necessary to implement this section.
19 SECTION 2. APPROPRIATION - ATTORNEY GENERAL - RETIRED LAW
20 ENFORCEMENT DOGS. There is appropriated out of any moneys in the general fund in the
21 state treasury, not otherwise appropriated, the sum of $30,000, or so much of the sum as may
22 be necessary, to the attorney general for the purpose of supporting retired law enforcement
23 dogs, for the biennium beginning July 1, 2023, and ending June 30, 2025.

1 SECTION 3. EXPIRATION DATE. Section 1 of this Act is effective through July 31, 2025,
2 and after that date is ineffective.
